How to Prepare for your Maternity Session

Your maternity session is a chance to slow down and honour this season — your body, your strength, and the quiet anticipation before everything changes. This guide will help you feel prepared, relaxed and confident so your session feels calm, connected and true to you.

When to Schedule Your Session

Maternity sessions are best photographed between 28–36 weeks, when your belly is beautifully rounded but you’re still comfortable enough to move and relax.

If you’re expecting twins or have a high‑risk pregnancy, we may photograph slightly earlier.

Before Your Session

Rest & Hydration

Try to:

  • Drink plenty of water the day before and morning of your session
  • Eat beforehand so you’re comfortable and energised
  • Allow extra time getting ready so you don’t feel rushed

A calm start sets the tone for the entire experience.

Release the Pressure

You do not need to know how to pose. You do not need to look a certain way. This session is not about perfection — it’s about connection and presence.

I’ll gently guide you every step of the way.

What to Wear

For Mums

Choose pieces that feel soft, comfortable and flattering.

  • Flowing dresses, knits and fitted bump‑hugging pieces photograph beautifully
  • Neutral tones, earthy shades and soft textures work best
  • Movement adds emotion and softness

If you feel unsure, I offer guidance and styling support to help you choose what feels right.

Partner & Children (If Included)

  • Neutral, complementary tones
  • Simple textures and minimal patterns
  • Comfortable clothing that allows natural movement
  • Avoid bright colours, logos and busy prints.

Hair & Makeup

Keep hair and makeup true to you.

  • Soft, natural makeup photographs beautifully
  • Wear your hair in a style that feels like yourself

If professional hair or makeup helps you feel confident, it’s always encouraged — but never required.

During Your Session

Your maternity session is slow and guided.

  • Gentle movement and natural prompts
  • Time to pause, breathe and connect
  • Space to include quiet moments as well as laughter

You’re welcome to take breaks whenever needed.

Location Tips

Whether outdoors or at home:

  • Trust the light and surroundings
  • Choose locations that feel meaningful or calm
  • Comfortable shoes (or barefoot) are always a good idea

I’ll guide you into the best light and positions throughout the session.

Trust the Experience

This season is fleeting. Your body is doing something extraordinary.

You don’t need to perform or pose — simply exist in this moment. I’ll take care of the rest.
