How to Prepare for your Newborn Session

Your newborn session is designed to be calm, baby‑led and unhurried. This guide will help you feel prepared, relaxed and confident so you can fully enjoy the experience.

Before Your Session

Timing Your Session

Newborn sessions are best photographed within the first 5–14 days of life, when babies are still sleepy and naturally curled. If your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, don’t stress — we’ll adjust as needed.

Feeding Your Baby

A well‑fed baby is a happy baby 🤍

  • Try to give your baby a full feed just before leaving home or on arrival at the studio.
  • If breastfeeding, cluster feeding beforehand is completely normal.
  • If bottle‑feeding, please bring extra milk/formula just in case.

There is always time for feeding during the session — we move at your baby’s pace.

Keep Baby Awake Beforehand (If Possible)

If you can, gently keep your baby awake for 30–60 minutes before your session (a bath or nappy change helps). This encourages a deeper sleep once we begin, but if this doesn’t happen — that’s okay too.

What to Bring

  • Milk/formula and feeding supplies
  • Dummy (even if your baby rarely uses one — it can be helpful for settling)
  • Spare nappies and wipes
  • Any sentimental items you’d love included (blanket, heirloom, toy)

Everything else — wraps, blankets, props and styling — is thoughtfully provided.

What to Wear

For Baby

Simple is best.

  • Neutral tones: creams, whites, soft browns, muted pastels
  • Avoid bold prints, logos and bright colours
  • A simple onesie is perfect (we’ll undress baby once settled)

For Parents

Choose pieces that feel comfortable, soft and timeless.

  • Neutral or earthy tones photograph beautifully
  • Avoid large logos, busy patterns and bright colours
  • Soft knits, linen and flowy fabrics work wonderfully

Mums — if you’re unsure what to wear, don’t worry. I guide you gently and focus on flattering angles and connection, not perfection.

For Siblings

  • Keep outfits simple and neutral
  • Bare feet photograph beautifully
  • Avoid characters, slogans

During Your Session

Your session is completely baby‑led.

  • We allow time for feeding, cuddles and settling
  • There is no rush — your baby sets the pace
  • Accidents happen (and are expected!)

My role is to create a calm, nurturing environment where your baby feels safe and you feel supported.

Your Home (For In‑Home Sessions)

If your session is held in your home:

  • Choose rooms with the best natural light
  • No need for a deep clean — a quick tidy is more than enough
  • Neutral bedding and uncluttered surfaces photograph best

I will guide you on positioning and light when I arrive.

Trust the Process

You do not need a ‘perfect’ baby or a perfectly calm session. Some babies sleep deeply, others want to be held — both result in beautiful, meaningful images.

Your only job is to slow down, cuddle your baby and be present. I’ll take care of the rest.
